12 year old male cat staggering and tipping over

by Candy
(Ontario, Canada)

My cat is 12 years old, and has had no previous health problems other than his teeth. For the past couple of days, he has been staggering, sometimes tipping over.

He has been eating and drinking normally.
do you know what this could be?

Hi Candy,

Sorry to hear about your cat. One possible cause of weakness in a cat is feline diabetes which often causes weakness of the hind limbs of cats.

This is caused by a neuropathy caused by high blood glucose levels. If your cat has weak hind legs, you should see a vet to discuss treatment options.

With leg problems, many cats will improve when their blood sugars come under control. In these cases, the hind leg weakness may be caused by electrolyte imbalances (low potassium levels) related to excessive urination. There is some evidence that methyl-B12, a vitamin, also known as methylcobalamin, may be a beneficial supplement.

So please see your vet to determine the exact cause and treatment of your cat's condition.

i used to work for a vet - sounds to me like he can't urinate. like his urethra is blocked. that happens to male cats. he needs a catheter put in by the vet. yes you need to take him in to see the vet right away.

My cat is sick

Beau, my male cat is a smoke. He has been neutered we think because he is quite large and has no interest in other cats other than being territorial. He was either a drop off or a stray. We have had him for at least 7 or 8 years and he was an adult when he came to us. We do not know his age. For the last 2 years he has been an indoor cat and was in excellent health until now. He has not eaten since yesterday and he is very slow moving. He seems to squat as if to go to the bathroom and he licks himself all the time in the genital area. He dribbles a bit and has been vomiting a bit. He drinks some water but will not eat. We are taking him in today to get checked, but we were wondering if you can prepare us a bit for what we might hear. My husband is retired and I only work parttime so money is pretty tight here. Thanks from Beau and Angel
