1200 Dogs Euthanized in Kansasby Dr. Chris
December 19, 2010 Because of an outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus in Wyoming, 1200 dogs in Kansas had to be euthanized. The dogs were located at Beaver Creek Kennels in Oberlin, Kansas. According to reports, cases of distemper started showing up in dogs at a pet store in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Kansas Animal Health Department has quarantined the facility at least twice in the past. Because the owner, Jeff Fortin could not sell any dogs due to the quarantine he had to let staff members go. Because there was no money, the dogs could not be fed either. Canine Distemper Virus is a viral disease that spreads very rapidly. The Kansas Animal Health Department humanely euthanized all the animals. The are buried in Decatur County after getting the proper permits. This outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus is one of the biggest outbreaks in the history of the area reports a pathologist at the University of Wyoming Veterinary Lab. According to the USDA, Jeff Fortin's kennel has had a history of violations over last three years.
