21 Reasons To Have a Pet

January 18, 2010 There are many reasons to have a pet, but some of the them are not very obvious. Its easy for people to point out that owning a pet helps you mentally, but what about physically?

Science is now showing us why having a pet is good for our health as well as for our minds. Here are 21 reasons to have a pet.

1. Companionship


There is nothing like having a pet waiting to great you at the door when you come home from work.

2. Less Medication


One study has shown that elderly people need less medication when they have a pet.

3. Socialize


It is easier to socialize with other pet owners and interact with other people who find your pet cute.

4. Responsibility


Kids who have pets learn responsibility from taking care of their pets.

5. Security


If you live alone, you tend to feel more secure at night if you have a pet in the house.

6. Exercise


Having a pet gives you a lot more exercise, from taking your dog for a walk to playing with your cat with the Mouse in the House.

7. Blood Pressure


Having pets is good for your heart, and has been shown to decrease blood pressure.

8. Live Longer


Heart attack patients live longer afterwards if they have a pet according to one study.

9. Fewer Doctor Visits


People with pets tend to have fewer doctor visits according to an Australian study.

10. Less Mice


You have less mice and other pests in the house when you have cats and dogs to chase them away.

11. Comedy


Pets often time provide comedic relief when you need it the most.

12. Unconditional Love


Pets love you unconditionally, which is something many people lack in their lives.

13. Cleaner House?


Pets can keep your house cleaner by picking up food particles you drop off the ground.

14. Sense of Accomplishment


Caring for, and keeping a pet healthy, can provide a great sense of accomplishment.

15. Great to Touch


There is nothing like petting a cat or dog that has a nice full and rich coat.

16. Hobby


Pets can provide a great hobby, from making doggy clothing to attending pet shows.

17. Humanitarian


One of the best reasons to have a pet is that you can save a pet's life by adopting one from a pet shelter.

18. Competition


For people who love competition, there are many dog hunting and dog agility courses you can compete in.

19. Husbandry


Having a pet allows you to teach others all about proper pet care.

20. Alarm Clock


Having a pet is like a free alarm clock that often wake you up a little bit too early sometimes.

21. Bed Warmer


Pets can help to keep you nice and warm in bed.

Although the clean-up of food particles is traded for litter on the floor. But if that makes you sweep more often, your house is ultimately still cleaner.
