3 Chihuahuas with Poop Like Gelatin
by Dr. Chris
Question:
I have 3 chihuahuas one 8ys and 10lbs, and 2 one and a half years old @ 3lbs. They all seem to have an upset stomach, their poop is gelatin like and some what loose. They are drinking water and eating, but I am still concerned. I have no money for a vet at this time and no transportation is there anything I can do for them at home? Perhaps stopping their Royal Canin Chihuahua food and feeding them boiled chicken breast till the diarrhea passes......I clean their stainless steel bowls every day....please help me.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your dogs.
Unless you just recently changed dog food, then I don't think it is related to that, although changing it is worth a try.
Since all three of them have it, it is likely either related to something they are eating, or they possibly have some intestinal parasites.
I know you don't have money, but ideally doing a fecal exam and possible deworming might be best.
In the mean time, you could try a gradual diet change, but that also tends to change the consistency of the stool.
Also be careful what type of treats they are eating, or if they are getting into something outside that they shouldn't be.
Thanks,
Dr. Chris

thanks for your advise. I volunteer at a shelter and will obtain some dewormer my 2 little dogs are from the shelter. I did find something very small and white in my big dogs poop but didn't give it much thought, it wasn't moving. the only treats I give them are Waggin Train Jerky Tenders.(made from chicken breast) The treat is 5 inches long and I break it into thirds and give it to them....they love them, What causes worms? they are not outside dogs they only go outside with me to the park or the dog park and I don't let them eat things on the ground.

Hi, Any dogs that go outside can pick up parasites. If you see white specks that look like grains of rice, it could tapeworms, which is not treated with regular dewormer. Read the label on the dewormer and see what it covers. If you can run a fecal at the shelter, that should tell us for sure if it is parasites.

I'm back I gave cabron and payaso(3lb dogs)1/2 tsp of Pro-Pet Roundworm and xavier(big) 1tsp as box directed I mixed it into food. Within an hour cabron abd xavier threw up. The upside was cabron pooped regular, no gel like poop xavier didn't change still gel like. This morning I found gel poop from cabron. They all act regular, playful not acting sick. payaso doesn't have gel poop. Since the worms are spaghetti like are these tape or round worms? I called the SPCA to get some quotes on deworming about $140.00 for xavier and cabron.

round worms are long and thing. Tapeworms have segmented bodies.
Did you see actual worms?
Response
yes I saw 1 in xaviers poop and sometime later saw what I believe was a worm in cabrons. payasos poop is solid and I saw nothing white, didn't break it apart to check. They all seem better today, I realize I need to get them all dewormed and will get a ride to spca to get xavier and cabron dewormed first. Will deworming take care of this or will this be something that must be repeated like their shots?

Most dogs get dewormed on a regular basis, so it is something that you will have to have done again in the future.
Thanks,
Dr. Chris
