58,000 Stray Dogs Shot in Baghdad
by Dr. Chris
July 11, 2010 In an attempt to control the surging stray dog population, estimated to be over 1.25 million, Baghdad, Iraq, has started a campaign to reduce their numbers.
Blamed for attacking residents and killing young children, the population of stray dogs had surged in recent years.
Although this dog control campaign was announced in 2008, it did not really start until April of this year.
According to Baghdad's provincial government, they have about 20 teams of police sharpshooters and veterinarians who are out seeking and euthanizing strays.
Baghdad lacks animal shelters, and shooting stray dogs continues the form of animal control practiced under the Hussein regime.
