Abyssinian Cat Breed Profile

Abyssinian Cat

Abyssinian Cat

The Abyssinian cat is a popular short-haired breed. It is especially popular in the USA. It is thought that they may have originally come from Egypt though the origins have never been certain. They are very regal in appearance and considered an inquisitive and loving pet.

History

The first Abyssinian documented was in 1882. However, many think the breed has existed for thousands of years. In fact, they resemble ancient Egyptian drawings. There is much mystery behind the breed. They also mark the first breed to have its genome published in its entirety. The cat used was named Cinnamon.

Appearance

Abyssinians have a silky coat and are medium sized cats with a lot of muscle and small paws. They often appear to be frowning because many have an 'M' shaped marking on their head above their eyes. Their color tone is warm and in the range of copper and browns and reds. You will usually see ticks of color as the cat is known for this attribute.

Temperament

Their temperament is friendly and active, and they really like to explore. They have a lot of energy which is why you will likely not see a fat cat of their breed. Do not look to Abyssinians for a lap cat because of their active nature. Still, they need a lot of attention and like to always be close to their families. They love toys and play time. They are known as vocal and intelligent animals and you will likely find them exploring high places in your house. They typically get along fine with other cats and children and are good for entertainment.

If you are looking at purchasing an Abyssinian cat you should not have any trouble. Breeders are easy to find if you do a quick internet search. Make sure that their coloring matches the description typical of the breed. As with any animal purchase, be certain that you have found a trustworthy breeder that treats their animals nicely. You do not want to find someone who doesn't.
