Afghan Hound Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris
Afghan Hound Dog
AKC Group: Hound Group The Afghan hound is a unique but splendid breed of dog. This stunning large dog is very regal and the focus of the show when they appear in shows and even on the silver screen. HistoryThey are one of the oldest dogs known to man. History revealed that they can be traced back in Egypt almost 4,000 years ago. Today, they are very popular in UK, Europe and the United States because they are good as family pets in addition of being show dogs. Physical attributesThe Afghan is undeniably the star of many dog shows around all over the world. This huge dog is 24-30 inches in height and on average they weigh between 45 and 60 pounds. Their color varies but having white markings especially on the head are not wanted for show dogs. The hair of this breed is very long and silky. One of the prominent features of Afghans is its jaws, it shows great strength and they have a scissor-like bite because of their straight teeth. Since the eyes are set high on the head, and never bulgy, they have a clear, unhindered view. This is the reason this breed goes to the selection acknowledged as the sight hound breed. TemperamentThe Afghan hound is a very playful dog. They love playing and when they do, it is their happiest time but they have the tendency to play excessively. It is very affectionate and a loving companion. One of its bad sides is that the Afghan has slow obedience intelligence. They are aloof and independent and may not respond easily to commands and as if they may not hear you! Because it is shy, it is not essentially a good protector but it is a very effective watchdog. Common heath problemsThe most common health problems with Afghan hound are they are prone to allergies, hip dysplasia, and cancer. They are also sensitive to anesthesia and the breed with the highest incidence of chylothorax.
