Alerts for Dog Flu Outbreaks

by Dr. Chris

August 31st 2009 Last week in Northern Virginia there was another outbreak of dog flu. This is the same disease that caused outbreaks in Miami and also in Denver over the last few years.

It is important to note that dog flu is different from the flu that infects humans and is completely different from swine flu.

In May a licensed vaccination for canine influenza virus was available for purchase through Intervet/Schering Plough. According to company this vaccine can significantly reduce the duration and the severity of symptoms in dogs and can help slow down the spread of the flu.

Right now the costs of this vaccination is about $20 for a series of two shots.

But if you don't will live in the area that has been affected by dog flu or your dog rarely travels than getting your dog vaccinated probably is not necessary.

Just like human flu most of the dogs that get canine flu recover in a few weeks. Some dogs do die but the percentage is less than 5% and is generally confined to older dogs or younger dogs who have compromised immune systems.

Right now the AVMA is not recommending vaccinating all dogs.

If you are concerned or have questions if your area is affected by Canine Flu, you should call your veterinarian.
