American Staffordshire Terrier Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris
American Staffordshire Terrier Dog
AKC Group: Terrier Group The Staffordshire Terrier has an impressive muscular look which, at first, may be off-putting to strangers and other dogs. HistoryAmerican Staffordshire Terrier can be traced back to the 19th century. It is said that this dog has descended from a line of fighting dogs early on. Having this in their blood, these dogs were later on used for fighting by gamblers and dog fighting enthusiasts. They were strong fighters and would often fight to the death just to please their owners. The sport has been prohibited, but illegal dog fighting still continues. This breed is considered to be the show dog and the other strain developed from it developed into the American Pit Bull Terrier which later on has been recognized as separate breeds. Around the year 1936, the breed was recognized and registered with the AKC. They have also gained fame from "Pete the Pup" who appeared in Our Gang comedies as the all-American canine pet. Physical FeaturesThis large dog is about 17-19 inches tall and weighing about 57-67 pounds. They are second cousins to the American Pit Bull, only somewhat larger. Its body structure is one of strength and agility. It has a strong and broad head structure. The muzzle is short and is characterized by a strongly set jaw bone and the teeth have a "scissor-like" bite. Their ears have a tendency toward being short and cropped. The eyes are round and black. The coat is short and dense and shiny when well managed and comes in many colors such as black/white, red/white, fawn/white, blue/white and brindle/white. PersonalityThe Staffordshire must be trained to socialize with other dogs for them to behave well. They are playful, but must be trained in socialization skills. Intelligent but must be taught early who the leader is through early socialization training. Strangers may be greeted with a nip or bite for they are not friendly towards them. Common Health ProblemsThey are most likely to suffer hip dysplasia, congenital heart disease & skin rashes. Also prone to heat stress.
