American Water Spaniel Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris
American Water Spaniel Dog
AKC Group: Sporting Group The American Water Spaniel (AWS) is an affectionate looking American original. This breed is a flushing type of competent retrievers which will hunt either birds, furry animals or even fish with enthusiasm. HistoryThey originated about the 1800's in Wisconsin but it could date back further; but this and its descendants are open for argument. They played big role in American history and during the market hunting days. They fulfilled the hunting requirements to fit into the small space of a canoe. The American Water Spaniel was registered by the American Kennel Club in 1940. Physical FeaturesThe American Water Spaniel gives the appearance of being compact and well balanced. It has a curly, wavy double coat which makes it adaptable to cold, intemperate weather. Their head is round, full and broad as it is with most of the spaniels and does not have a top knot. Their cute round eyes may be yellow brown, brown, hazel or dark and blend with the color of the coat. The neck of these dogs is well defined and the shoulders are lean and muscular; the legs are straight and well boned. The tail will swing from side to side with the dog's gait and the feet are webbed as this breed of dog is a great swimmer. PersonalityThe AWS sometimes has a mind of its own. It requires patience and variety of training methods for top performance as well as an owner who will be the leader. Bitches in heat, however may not respond to commands at all. They are affectionate and kind and a good companion dog when properly trained. It makes for a good watchdog. Can be taught to be playful. Common Health ProblemsThis breed is prone to have cardiac abnormalities, cancer, hip dysplasia, diabetes and hyperthyroid conditions. They are prone to epilepsy, cataracts, PRA, patella luxation and skin allergies.
