AKC Group: Working Group The Anatolian Shepherd dog, if taken regularly to obedience school and trained properly, can be a good family pet. HistoryThe Anatolian Shepherd dog originates from Asia minor and the Plateau of Anatolian. The ASD can withstand any temperatures from the exceptionally hottest weather of the summer to the bitter cold of the winter. It dates back for centuries. It was bred as natural a protector of sheep and other livestock but has also been the companion dog for many a shepherd. Most of them are from the Sivas-Kangal region and it is related to the Kangal Dog and has often been called a Turkish Shepherd. Physical FeaturesThe Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a large, rugged, powerful and impressive breed of dog. They are muscular and agile and possessive of great endurance. It is about 27-30 inches tall and weighs approximately 88-145 pounds. The coat is about four inches in length though longer around the neck forming a collar of fur or "ruff." Feathering of the fur may appear on the ears, legs and tail. Common colors for the ASD are cream, sesame, and white; parts can be different color, large pie-bald patches. The V shape ears are set higher than the plane on the head and droop. The body is well proportioned and the chest deep. The neck will be slightly arched, muscular and of moderate length. The back is also muscular, powerful and level. The tail is set high on the rump and will be slightly turned up a bit. PersonalityThey are easy to train if trained early and consistently. It must be taught socialization skills to be act acceptably in situations which arise. They are not very playful and it is intelligent and must learn to socialize. The breed can be dominant and stubborn. Common Health ProblemsThey are prone to canine hip dysplasia, dermatological problems and entropy. They are most likely to suffer from cancer and heart conditions when they get old.
