Australian Shepherd Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris
Australian Shepherd Dog
AKC Group: Herding Group Though primarily bred as a working class dog, the Australian Shepherd can make a fine family pet if the owners are willing to put in the time and attention for this energetic dog. HistoryThe Aussie Shepherd is a breed of guiding dog that, oddly, doesn't come from Australia but rather was trained on the farms of the Western U.S. Its history is rather vague hence the misleading name. It is believed to have originated in the Basque region of Spain where it was used for shepherding livestock there. The breed as we know them today did not exist before the 1900's. Physical FeaturesThe Aussie is about 21-23 inches in height and weighs approximately 50 to 60 pounds. The Aussie is slightly longer than tall. The neck should be of moderate length and strong and the top line straight, strong and level; the legs should also be straight and strong. The chest is broad but not deep. The eyes can be brown, blue or amber and are almond shaped; they should not protrude nor be sunken. The ears are triangular in shape. The colors can be black, red, blue merle and red merle. They have various combinations on the face and body and they also have copper point and white marking too. Some Aussie's are born with naturally bobbed tails, some with long tails. PersonalityThis breed is generally gentle with strangers especially after getting to know them. They love to play and learn quickly. Kind and loving to those they know. Australian Shepherds will protect their territory and those considered part of their pack. They will not dominate those who command respect. Common Health ProblemsThey can develop back and hip problems and vision problems. They are also prone to pancreatic, bladder problems and urinary infections. Most of this breed suffers from thyroid problems and many can be epileptic.
