Australian Terrier Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris
Australian Terrier Dog
AKC Group: Terrier Group The Australian Terrier, with training, can be a loyal family pet or a companion for someone living alone. HistoryThe Aussie is thought to be the first dog recognized for being original to Australia around the later part of the 1860's. But it is also thought to be a descendant of the rough coated type of the terriers brought from the UK by settlers in the early 1800's. The Aussie dog is common in Australia and after recognition in the early 1900's by various kennel clubs it has grown in popularity in much of the English speaking world since then. Physical FeaturesThe Australian Terrier stands about 10 inches and weighs about 14 pounds. It has a medium length, harsh, shaggy double coat. This double coat makes it ideal in all sorts of weather in temperate climates. Around the neck there is a collar of fur or ruff. The neck is long, strong and slightly arched. The colors of the coat are shades of blue, red with a lighter colored topknot; there are markings on the face, ears, body and legs which are tan. The head is long and the strong muzzle is about equal to the size of the skull; the jaws are powerful and the strong teeth produce a scissor-like bite. The eyes are small, alert and are colored dark brown to dark. The ears are small, erect and set wide apart; the nose is black. PersonalityThe Australian Terrier is a short but alert and energetic. The Aussie is loyal and affectionate companions. They will tend to dominate unless it recognizes who the leader is. They are a very playful animal and it can be a good family pet and good with children but be cautious around small children until properly socialized.
