Basenji Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris
Basenji
AKC Group: Hound Group Basenji is considered as one of the oldest species to this day. It is an elegant but athletic breed of dog and a good family pet. HistoryThe Basenji breed is one that can be dated back as far as the stoneage. There is paleontological evidence that its ancestors existed during the Stone Age and was known as Canis Palustrus or the dog of the marsh. These barkless hunting canines that originated from Africa were earlier depicted on the tombs of ancient Egyptians. Historians would picture these dogs to lie at the feet of the mighty rulers of those times. The 19th century had the emergence of the breed in the Nile and Congo where they were used as hunting dogs. Physical FeaturesThe Basenji dog (Basenji) originated in Africa and is an athletic dog with a smooth, shiny coat and about the size of a fox terrier. It stands about 17 inches in height and weighs approximately 22-26 pounds. The colors of the coat may be a tri- color or tri- brindle color. It comes in sable red, liver cream and white. It is an elegant looking dog with long legs and a level back. The small almond shaped eyes give the appearance that the Basenji is squinting. They seem to run at a gallop and enjoy what they were bred for, hunting and running. They want to chase every animal they see. PersonalityThe Basenji is very playful very affectionate, bonds well with family members. An intelligent dog; should be trained at an early age and learn to be obedient. They have a tendency to be shy and aloof around strangers and will circle them as if suspicious of them. Common Health ProblemsThe usual health problems are Fanconi syndrome (inherited kidney disorder) which may show up after age four, blood disorders and hip dysplasia. Watch out for overfeeding them because they have a tendency for malabsorption. Progressive retinal atrophy is also a health issue for them.
