Our vet has not done x-rays. He felt they would not show a bulging disc like an MRI or C-scan would. In order for us to have an MRI or C-scan we would have to travel to Vancouver (we live on a Gulf Island)and the cost for these tests would be very expensive. We are hopeful with the pain meds and rest, that he will heal.

Belgian Tervuren with bulging disc by: Anonymous
Sorry to hear your Belgian Tervuren has a bulging disc. Rest is definetly in order. In fact it might be good thing he is sleepy so he is not so active.
Has the vet done any imaging, x-rays etc, on your Belgian Tervuren's back at all?
Some back problems do heal on their own. Severe ones require surgery. I would say its a good thing your vet is trying rest first before surgery?

Bulging Disc by: Anonymous
My 3 year old Belgian Tervuren injured himself one month ago. We were treating him with Robaxin, thinking it was a pulled muscle. Now our vet has diagnosed a bulging disc and prescribed Meloxican, Tramadol and Robaxin and no activity for two weeks or until he is better. He is really knocked out by the medication. My question is how long can a dog typically tolerate these pain killers? I have read that if treatment is not immediate, full recovery from a disc injury is not likely. I appreciate any comments you may have. Thank you from a very worried mom.
