Belgium Wants All Cats Sterilized by 2016by Dr. Chris
Brussels, Belgium
August 22, 2010 While it may only be in draft form right now, there is a plan to systematically sterilize all of Belgium's cats by 2016. According to officials, Belgium's cat population has been increasing at a rate of 6% a year. This has lead to over 13,000 stray cats being euthanized just last year. Officials estimate that there are over 1 million cats, in a country of only 10 million people. The reason why the plan has not moved forward right now is because according to the animal welfare office of the Federal Public Service (SPF) there is a funding issue. Officials also stressed the plan would only apply to short-haired breeds, not purebred cats like Abyssinians or Persians. The cat sterilization plan would start with shelter cats and then would require all cat owners to register their cats and sterilized them.
