Bichion licking paw sore

by Therese
(Mishawaka, IN)

My Bichion has a soar paw and won't stop licking it. He has made it worse and he had the same problem last spring and had to have a steriod shot, the vet said that he can't have any more steriods because he is only two and half years old. What can we do? I have tried putting socks on it and wrapping it with first aid tape and putting a booty on it and all he does is tear it off and keep licking. Now his paw is very red and soar.

Thanks for you help.

Bichon has hot spot
by: Anonymous

From the description it sounds like your dog may have a hot spot. For hot spots here is what you do, or your vet should do:

1. Shave around the affected area. We want the area to dry out and get lots of air.

2. Clean it with a light cleanser can apply a cool compress a couple of times a day.

3. Elizabethan collars and oral antibiotics, and topical sprays may be prescribed by your vet.

4. Things you could try at home after consulting your vet include tea bag compresses and Domeboro's solution to help dry out the area.
