AKC Group: Working Group The Boxer dog is a tough looking breed originally from Germany. Its coat feels silky smooth but don't let this fool you. They need to be properly trained otherwise they can have behavior problems. HistoryThe Boxer dog was established in Germany in the 1800's. The Boxer's family history includes 2 types of German mastiff dogs, the Barenbeiszer and the Bullenbeiszer. These dogs later crossed with the strong family history of the Bulldog. Early Boxers were utilized for bull baiting, cart pulling, cattle dogs, dog fighting, to gather livestock and also to pin and catch wild bison and boar until hunters could come along. They afterwards became common circus and theater dogs. Physical FeaturesBoxer's smooth, short, close-fitting coat is available in, brindle, fawn, mahogany, and tan, black usually with white spots. The tail is defined high and often docked. The eyes are dark brown. The ears are set high, either kept natural or cropped. The head is in proportion to the body. The muzzle is blunt and short. The nose is black and large with very open nostrils. The jaw comes with an under bite. PersonalityThe Boxer is joyful, curious, energetic, high-spirited and playful. Very intelligent, keen and fast to understand. The Boxer is a great dog for relentless activity. Affectionate and loyal, and they are notable for how they go along so well with kids. Common Health ProblemsSome serious issues are boxer cardiomyopathy along with heart disease, thyroid and sub-aortic stenosis. Can be at risk of skin as well as other allergies. Often susceptible to hip dysplasia and epilepsy. From age 8 on they are more likely to get cancers than some other breeds. These dogs may snore and drool. Some white Boxer dogs are susceptible to hearing problems.
