AKC Group: Sporting Group The Brittany was once called the Brittany Spaniel. Named after the French providence of origin, it is a great family and sporting dog. HistoryThe Brittany breed was called after the providence in northern France in the early 1800's. Proof of their appearance in the 17th century show up in paintings and tapestries of the time when the illustrations of a dog wearing a white and orange coat were utilized for retrieving and hunting. Reverend Davies had granted the very first written data of this canine in 1850 in which he mentioned a little tailed dog that became a regular partner and worked nicely as a retriever. When breed recognition increased in America during the 1920s, the Canadian Kennel Club and AKC also acknowledged the breed. Physical FeaturesBrittany dogs possess long legs for working, showing an agile stride, and covering more ground on the field. The breed features a single coating which is dense, feathered light and flat. Recognized colors on this dog are black and white, liver and white, orange and white, black tri-color and liver tri-color with assorted patterns. These dogs stand around 17 to 21 inches for males and 18 to 21 inches for females. They generally weigh up to 35 to 40 pounds and 30 to 40 pounds respectively. The normal life span is 10 to 12 years. They can be tailless or have a short docked tail about four inches long. Many countries in Europe forbid the docking of dog tails. PersonalityBrittany dogs are a great watchdogs. It'll warn you if surprised by somebody at front door. It is loving and definitely will give back the love. It doesn't show aggression or dominance to others. Usually are aloof but curious, some unsocialized dogs can appear reserved. Common Health ProblemsEar infections are typical if they're not checked regularly. May also be prone to epilepsy and hip dysplasia.
