Bull Mastiff Great Dane mix in heat

by katrina
(nsw)

My 10 month old female bull mastiff x great dane has just gone on heat for the first time. Yesterday a male dog got into our yard and I don't know if he mated with her, I am worried that she might be pregnant. I think she's too young, I don't want her to get sick, is there anything I can do?

Hi Katrina,

The only way to tell if she had gotten bred or not is to have your vet do an exam. If it is likely she mated he/she could give an injection to prevent pregnancy if it is still early.

The best thing is to have your dog spayed. This will stop your worrying every time she comes into heat, but will also dramatically lower her chances of having mammary tumors.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
