Bull Terrier Dog

AKC Group: Terrier Group

The Bull Terrier dog you identify old beer advertisements on the TV. Best known for its egg shaped head. While this dog may appear tough, it is actually very friendly and loves to play.

Circa 1900, the Bull terrier was identified by the AKC. TV advertisements made the canine legendary with the beer drinking and non-beer drinking crowds alike. Known as Budweiser's Spuds MacKenzie, its popularity soared.

Originally from England, it is derived from several bulldog and terrier breeds and used to hunt vermin. James Hinks is the man credited with refining this breed, and the Bull Terrier was once known as the "Hinks Breed." There is actually another smaller version of this breed called the Miniature Bull Terrier.

Physical Features

The Bull Terrier is a heavy but small strong dog that grows to abut 16 to 22 inches tall and weighs about 30 to 60 pounds. They could look intimidating but are nice and will be friendly. Even its oval formed head looks odd at first. Their close set eyes are dark and triangular; the eyes have to look deep set. The eyes are set high in an elliptical skull. The muzzle is long and also nose sways down with the snout.

The ears are upright and point higher. The body is buff and lengthier than tall with tight skin. They're broader at the neck compared to rump. The tail tapers from the body. The legs are large and strong looking. Although they stand strongly they usually look prepared to be bowled over. The circular feet are nearly feline like. Coats appear in brindle, white with marks and solid white. Black brindle, fawn and red are also shades that are popular.

They're generally very passionate dogs that love people's company. It is pleasant with other people. But strangers must be informed towards making fast actions in jest on the owner as dog may have a nip. The Bullies are wonderful protectors of property and people.

Common Health Problems

Deafness in white Bull Terrier dogs. Skin allergies are typical. Keep protected from the sun with a high SPF sunscreen to avoid burning. They may also suffer from obsessive compulsive disorders like self-mutilation, tail chasing, and excessive licking.
