Bulldog Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris
English Bulldog Puppy
AKC Group: Non-Sporting Group The Bulldog is an iconic breed and is probably the most well known. Also called the British Bulldog or English Bulldog, it is a mascot for hundreds of high schools and university sport teams. HistoryThe English Bulldog came from the British Islands, originated from the old Asiatic mastiff. The dog was presented with the name "bull" by reason of its utilization in bull baiting as well as their powerful look of a small bull. They were intense, ferocious and brave with the strength to fight adult bulls until it was banned in the 1800's. Today's Bulldogs do not resemble its earlier bull fighting ancestor. Today's bulldog is much shorter and heavier set, and I don't think it would successfully fight a bull today. Physical FeaturesThe bulldog is usually a breed with characteristically solid shoulders and a large head. There are usually solid folds of skin over a bulldog's brow, then black and round wide-set eyes. The coat is short, sleek and flat, with colors of brindle, fawn, red, white, as well as piebalds of these. Legs are short curved, are prone to many skeletal problems. PersonalityWhile the English Bulldog can look quite scary, it is one of the gentlest of dogs. But it is still a good guard dog. It is referred to as a very passionate and reliable animal, caring with kids, but regarded for its bravery and its superb protecting abilities. Common Health ProblemsBulldogs commonly have hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and cherry eye. Due to their large heads, females often experience difficulty giving birth (called dystocia).
