Cairn Terrier Dog
AKC Group: Terrier Group Originally from the Scottish Highlands, the Cairn Terrier became an all American dog as Toto, from the Wizard of Oz. Originally used for vermin hunting, today it accelerates at field and obedience trials. HistoryThe Cairn terrier was at first utilized as a dog for hunting rats and mice on farmland in Drynock on the island of Skye, in Scotland in the 1500's. It had been discovered by Captain Macleod. It had been considered that the cairn originated from strains of several terriers from Skye and Drynock. The Cairn acquired its name by the capacity to pursue its quarry by having the ability to press over the obstacles of stone fences or rocks called cairns. While being useful as a seeker of vermin, the Cairn seemed to be valued then as a companion dog and a watchdog. Physical FeaturesIt stands only 10 to 13 inches tall and weighs about 13 to 17 pounds. Its coat can come in many colors such as black, brindle, gray, red, sandy or tan. They also have pointed ears placed high on the head. The nose is black and the eyes are wide apart. Their body is muscular and well proportioned. The head is wider and shorter then any other Terrier breed. PersonalityThe Cairn terrier is actually a toy dog that usually forgets it is small. It can test bigger dogs with tenacity. It is a good watchdog and should learn how to be socialized. A natural tendency to dig, it must keep active. Common Health ProblemsProblem with weight if not exercised. Can develop skin rashes from allergies. Also susceptible to cataracts, Legg Calve Perthes, and patella luxation.
