Canaan Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris AKC Group: Herding Group The Canaan dog is originally from Israel and used to herding since Biblical times. Recognized by the AKC fairly recently, 1997, it only arrived in the United States in 1965. HistoryThe Canaan Dog originates in Israel and goes back over 1,000 years which makes it among the most ancient breeds. At the start it was regarded as a pest. But this dog showed its prowess at herding lambs and protecting the resting shepherds. After the Romans took over the Israelites in the 2nd century the dog appeared to die out or almost vanish. It is believed that the dog had retreated into the Negev desert that functioned as a hiding place for various animals. Free, these dogs lived a wild life in the desert. But, nevertheless, they resumed their herding duties as new individuals filled into the area. Physical FeaturesThe Canaan Dog is actually a moderate sized tough dog that appears around 19 to 24 inches high and weighs about 37 to 57 pounds. It features a medium length double coat which shields it from heat and cold. The external coat is rougher compared to smooth undercoat. You'll typically see the Canaan in brown, black, red or white; it is sometimes white with brown or black areas. It's got pricked up ears that are wide at the bottom. The eyes are almond shaped and dark brown in color. The tail is hairy and when the dog is at the alert it tends to curl. PersonalityThe Canaan dog learns quickly and easily and is very clever. They are loyal and make great family dogs. Make sure to give them lots of attention, otherwise they could become destructive with boredom. Common Health ProblemsSupposedly one of the healthiest of dog breeds, they do not suffer from hereditary diseases.
