Cardigan Welsh Corgi Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris
Cardigan Welsh Corgi Dog
AKC Group: Herding Group The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest herding breeds in the world. Originally from Wales this dog is very energetic and often used in dog agility and herding trials. HistoryThe Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs are believed to originate from the Teckel category of dogs that also developed Dachshunds. They're one of the most ancient of all herding dog breeds, considered to have been around in Wales for more than 3,000 years. Though at first the breed incorporated only brindle and red variations, by crossbreeding with collies, the colors of the Corgi grew to add blue merle and tricolor. They are closely related to the only other corgi breed, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi which also originated from Wales. Physical FeaturesThe Cardigan Welsh Corgi usually is long, but short legged dog. The topline is even. The double coat is thick and short and great at keeping it warm and dry during inclement weather. The ears are large for its body and always upright. Normally between 10 and 13 inches tall and weighs 30 to 40 pounds. Coat shades consist of brindle and black, red, brindle, fawn, sable, blue merle (marbled; black and gray), tan and black without or with white spots. There are usually white spots on the chest, legs, neck and areas of the snout. PersonalityCardigan Welsh Corgis are usually exceptional watchdogs, as they're highly attentive to the approach of strangers to their homes. Cardigans are usually known for utilizing their common sense.
