Cat loosing hair in clumps

long-haired neutered 5 year old male, losing hair in clumps from back legs and somach, progressing up his back. No 'dandruff', eating well, bowels fine so far. No change in foods. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Loosing hair in clumps over the hindlegs and back makes me think the cat is pulling the hair out, rather than just the hair falling out by itself. This could be determined by looking at hair shafts under a microscope. Also is there any signs of redness of the skin?

There could be several reasons for this but two could be a change in stress levels or a change in hormones. Only your vet could determine this, so it would be best to have him examined.

Dr. Chris
