Cerenia (Maropitant): First FDA Approved Anti-emetic for Dogsby Dr. Chris
October 5, 2009 Maropitant is a newly approved drug that is a major advancement in the management of vomiting in dogs. Almost all drugs we have been using in dogs to control vomiting, like chlorpromazine, diphenhydramine, metoclopramide, ondansetron, and dolasetron were developed for use in humans and are not approved for use in dogs and cats. Indications for Maropitant in Dogs:1. Prevent Acute Vomiting 2. Treat Acute Vomiting 3. Prevent vomiting induced by motion sickness. Forms AvailableCerenia comes in 4 different tablet sizes; 16mg, 24 mg, 60mg, and 160mg. Also there is an injectable form as well that comes in 20ml vials Cerenia Dose for DogsGive Cerenia CERENIA Injectable Solution subcutaneously at 1.0 mg/kg (0.45 mg/lb) equal to 1.0 mL/10 kg (1.0 mL/22 lb) of body weight once daily for up to 5 consecutive days. Administer CERENIA Tablets orally at a minimum dose of 8 mg/kg (3.6 mg/lb) body weight once daily for up to 2 consecutive days. How Do I Give CERENIA Tablets To My Dog?Don't feed your dog for one hour before giving Cerenia. It is recommended you give it at least 2 hours before traveling with a small amount of food. How Often Can I Give Cerenia?You can give it once a day for up to two days in a row.
