Chihauhua difficulty breathing

by Diane
(Fullerton,Ca)

Hi docter,i have a 5 year old female chihuahua, and is back breathing, kind of sounds like she is snorting when she breaths like a stuffy nose.she has had this for some time and it does not seem to be bothered with it when she runs around. She eats well and seems healthy, except for the breathing thing.Could this be allergys?

Hi Diane,

There could be multiple causes of this breathing pattern. Two possibilities could be allergies, and the other is reverse sneezing. If she is an inside dog you could try keeping house hold allergies down to a minimum. A reverse sneeze is when they appear to be sucking air in. Usually it is not associate with any specific disease and could be just due to allergies.

It you notice the symptoms getting worse I would see your vet, but it doesn't appear it will.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris

chihuahua difficulty breathing. help! NEW
by: Dalton

I have a chihuahua who's around 11 years old. she used to get excited and when she did, she sounded like she was coughing. today she started to where she's breathing really slow and shallow, her eyes are bigger than normal, her nose is dry, and she's cold. we can't get to a vet until tomorrow but for now I have her covered up on a heating pad. is there anything else that I can do and what's the possible problem?

That this is normal... their throat collapses when they get excited. It's normal and although scary it's not dangerous. When the dog does this they try and calm him down. What works well for us as well is standing them up straight and rub their belly. It prob helps them more to calm them than really helping the throat but either way it helps. I think it's more commen in small dogs. Mine is a Havanese.

Cockapoo
by: Anonymous

My cockapoo has done this thing like grunting and its sounds as if she is gasping for air but her mouth doesnt open. It does sound like a reverse sneeze. They last a long time up to ten minutes. It's super scary and I am deeply concerned about my dog. What's wrong?

no my dog does not do this when he is excited. He sometimes does it when he is sleeping or out of the nowhere, he also has this kind of runny nose too. Can it just be that he has a cold?

chihuahua breathing problem
by: Anonymous

Being so young, its hard to tell if it would be due to seasonal allergies. Does your dog only do this when it gets over excited? Sometimes chihuahuas can become way to excited.

Allergies usually come with other signs like skin reddness too.

my 10 month chihuahua has breathing problems
by: lizzyy

My dog has trouble breathing too, he gets these kind of asthma attacks they last about 10 seconds or so but i pat him on the back to see if that helps but it doesn't. He gets these attacks out of no where even when he is resting. Are these allergies or those he have asthma, can anybody can help me with this?
