Chinese Crested Dog
AKC Group: Toy Group The Chinese Crested dog is one of the most unique dogs. Although some people love their look, they are often voted the World's Ugliest Dog. This breed has a great personality and loves to be around families. HistoryThe Chinese Crested dog is believed to originate from African Hairless Terriers. Chinese ships stopped at Africa during their voyages and likely kept these dogs to hunt rats on their ships. They relabeled the dogs "Chinese Crested" and the name caught on. This breed was officially recognized by the AKC in 1991 and has won over 8 World Ugliest Dog competitions. Physical FeaturesThe comes in two varieties, hairless and powderpuff. The Hairless variety only has hair on its head, tail, and feet. The Powderpuff has a double coat this is often white and straight. The skin of a Hairless comes in various colors, which range from a light flesh to black. Hairless Crested typically are missing several premolar teeth, this isn't deemed a mistake. Adults reach a height of 11 to 13 inches and weigh 10 to 13 pounds. PersonalityThese dogs are attentive, captivating, agile, and adorable. Playful and passionate with kids. They have a tendency to be very emotionally involved with their masters. These dogs love company, and want constant human companionship. If not properly trained the dogs can become dominant and may bite, growl or snap at people. Common Health ProblemsThe Hairless Chinese Crested dogs do acquire sunburn and a fine sun block needs to be applied when the dogs will be out under the sun. The hairless variety is susceptible to loss of teeth and rot. Powder Puffs have more healthy teeth. The Hairless variety also have what is known as a "primitive mouth" because all the teeth are pointed, not just the canines.
