Chiuahua allergies

by kelly
(Florida)

My male dog , wheezes like he is con congested it typically occurs when he sleeps on my down feather top bed so I discontinued this, and seemed to get better. however he has recently begun to have this all the time and is constantly itching himself even though he is completely flea free ( have made sure) I bath him in skin treatment shampoos and conditioners for this, I have given him 1 benedril he is over 7 pounds. what else can I do to help him be more comfortable, besides not letting him go outside.

Hi Kelly,

Sorry to hear about your problem. But from the description it sounds like your dog may have allergies (itching and no fleas). Also it is starting to warm up so there are more allergens in the air as well which is not helping the problem.

I don't know how old your dog is but before continuing to medicate him yourself I would a have an exam done by a vet to rule out other systemic problems to be sure that all this is just from allergies.

Also the vet could help determine the type of allergy (food, grass, household allergens, etc). This will help tailor the treatment plan. Also benadryl will not work for all dogs.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
