Chow Chow Dog
AKC Group: Non-Sporting Group The Chow Chow dog is one of the most ancient dog breeds dating back to the times before Christ. Originally from Northern China, these dogs are used to frigid temperatures. Their thick coats not only keep them warm but give them a regal look. HistoryThe actual source of Chow Chow isn't known, but we truly know that it's a very ancient breed. The most ancient known dog breeds date back thousands of years, and are similar in shape to Chow Chow. Images on Chinese ceramic look similar to the Chow Chow and date back to 206 BC. Chow Chows were utilized by the Chinese to perform many physical duties. These duties included boat guard, cart and sled puller, pheasant and sable guarding, herding, hunter of wolves, and security of the house. Physical FeaturesThe Chow Chow is big, sturdy dog. The 2 most special attributes of Chow Chow are the black-blue tongue and it is nearly straight hind thighs that makes it walk appear stilted. The commonest shades are solid black, blue, cream, cinnamon and red, but this may come on gray, rare white, or a tan. The coat often has darker or lighter shades, but isn't multicolored. Adult dogs weigh between 45 to 70 pounds and they can reach heights of 18 to 22 inches. PersonalityThe Chow Chow is very respectful dog. The chow usually shows love just with those it bonds to, so new guests to the home shouldn't press their luck. This breed is very independent, like a cat, and often does not seek approval. Lots of homeowner's insurance companies won't include dogs of this breed in their policies.
