Clumber Spaniel Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris AKC Group: Sporting Group The Clumber Spaniel dog is one of the 9 original AKC dog breeds. It is a very slow moving dog with a distinctive gait. A great family dog, but some may not like the fact that this breed drools more and sheds more then average. HistoryThe Clumber Spaniel's background is unclear before the 1800's. One explanation is that it started in France. Another explanation holds it originated in Britain from old kinds of hunting spaniels, probably by crossing them with Basset Hounds, Saint Bernards, or even the extinct Alpine Spaniel. A third explanation is that it originated from the old kind of Bleinheim Spaniel, which has been later integrated to King Charles strain of Spaniel. Initially these dogs were big gundogs, shaded white and lemon whereas the current breed of them is really a smaller lap/toy canine breed. Physical FeaturesClumber Spaniel is thick boned dog with short legs. The feathered coat is soft to touch, flat, dense and straight. The coat is primarily white, with orange or lemon tattoos. The Clumber Spaniel is the biggest of spaniels, and is heavy and long-bodied. They stand only about 17 to 20 inches tall and can weigh from 55 to 85 pounds. PersonalityClumber Spaniel is referred to as a docile, intelligent, pleasant and sweet dog. They're very loving and well behaved, but not very energetic when older. They don't react well to tough discipline; and need to have a calm, confident, and firm owner. Common Health ProblemsSome are susceptible to cataracts, entropion, panosteitis (juvenile lameness), dry eyes and hip dysplasia. They have a tendency to drool, snore and wheeze. Clumbers are susceptible to skin and flea allergies. Loves to chew, be careful to not let them swallow unusual objects. Has a tendency to gain weight very easily.
