Confused about Dog Food Labels? Read This

by Luke Blaise

Dog food labels can be very using confusing. In fact almost all owners fail to understand the importance of completely understanding what it says on the bag and what is required for your dog's health.

There are government laws that pet food manufacturers must follow, but it can be confusing for the consumer. Here are three common loopholes on dog food labels.

Loophole #1

When you look at the guaranteed analysis on the label it will often say, for example, that protein is no less than 9%. But what it doesn't tell you is what type of protein it is.

Not all proteins are created equal. Manufacturers often use vegetable proteins instead of animal proteins as a way to save money at your pet's expense. Vegetable proteins do not have the same quality as animal proteins, which can really hurt growing puppies.

Loophole #2

Do you know the difference between "chicken dog food" and "dog food with chicken"? "Chicken dog food" has to contain 95% chicken, where as "dog food with chicken" only needs to contain 3% chicken.

This is quite a large difference isn't it? Just because you see a certain meat mentioned on the cover of the bag, it does not necessarily mean that it's even in the product in a decent quantity. For example "chicken flavored dog food" has no minimum requirements for the amount of chicken it needs to contain.

Loophole #3

When you look at the guaranteed analysis on the bag you will often see the percentages of protein, fat, and fiber that a product contains. Most labels look like this: "Protein - No Less Then 9%."

Labels like this make it very hard to compare two different foods because one could be only 9% of an ingredient, where as another could contain 50% of it. But they both still have a 9% minimum! Because of this you often have to read further on the bag and sometimes even contact the manufacturer for additional product information.

So What Can You Do?

If you're a concerned dog owner, then you need to educate yourself about dog food labels. Not all pet products are created equal and if you want to find the best one you have to do some research.
