Coton de Tulear Dog Breed Profile

The Coton de Tulear dog is popular for its small size, cottony soft hair, and minimal shedding properties. Originally from Madagascar, this is a playful dog gets along great with children.


The Isle of Madagascar is the nation where the Coton de Tulear originated from. The breed is generally known as the Royal Dog of Madagascar and it also was handed the honor of being Madagascar's national breed. Cotons were likewise highlighted on Madagascar stamps.

Dogs arrived on the island when a shipwreck occurred around Tulear, a coastal port city in Madagascar. The port is currently known as Toliara. The small white dogs established themselves in the forest.

The Malagasy were captivated by the breed's look so when they discovered their clownish antics they presented the breed to the King. In no time, the dogs had become the most liked of the nobles. For hundreds of years just the royalty were permitted to possess Coton de Tulear dogs. The breed was presented as presents to visiting French royalties and after that the dog became popular in Europe and in France.

Physical Features

Coton de Tulears are robust small dogs that could live fifteen to nineteen years. A female weighs in at around eight to eleven pounds and the males are around nine to thirteen pounds. A Coton male breed stands ten to twelve inches high and the female comes with an approximate height of eight and a half to ten and a half inches.

The non-oily cottony white coat is the reason why this breed of dog different from other dogs of the same type. The coat is how the dog was given its name. The coat is primarily white with lemon, grey or light brown patches on the dog's body and ear. Coat could also be tri-colored.


Very loving and sweet tempered. They would like to please folks. The dog is independent, and sometimes stubborn. So firmness and patience will be needed. It'll be a great watchdog as it'll warn the master when there's a burglar or something is wrong.

Common Health Problems

The Coton de Tulear dogs are susceptible to heart problems, eye problems, disc problems, and liver shunts. Also they are prone to separation anxiety problems as well.
