Crazy: Dog is ‘Totaled’ After Car Accidentby Dr. Chris August 21, 2011 This is something I find crazy. According to reports, Farmer’s Insurance agency told a Colorado woman her dog was “totaled” after an accident and won’t pay any veterinary bills. Marcia Pinkstaff was out walking her dog when it was hit by a van. She says her veterinarian diagnosed the dog with lung tears, a torn diaphragm, and liver damage. Farmer’s Auto Insurance, who insured the driver of the van says they would only pay for the initial veterinary visit and would “consider” paying for only one follow up visit. This is crazy, because a dog with this much internal trauma is going to need more than one follow up veterinary visit. Farmer’s says they considered the dog “totaled.” So they are telling her they want her to buy a cheap replacement dog, rather than spend money fixing the injured dog. Most auto insurance companies consider dogs as property and therefore don’t cover them medically. Sasha is a 9 year old lab mix.
