Curly-Coated Retriever Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris AKC Group: Sporting Group The Curly-Coated Retriever is a very distinctive looking dog. With its curly coat it can withstand the coldest weather. It is a high energy intelligent dog that is great at many tasks. HistoryThe Curly-Coated Retriever is regarded as among the earliest retriever breeds. It's been employed for hunting and rescuing purposes since the late 1800's in England. The breed likely originated from the English Water Spaniel, the Irish Water Spaniel, the Labrador, as well as the Poodle and probably the St. John's Newfoundland. Physical FeaturesShow standards require male dogs to be 25 to 27 inches tall at the withers, with females standing 23 to 25 inches tall. They are the tallest of the retriever breeds. Weight must be in proper proportion to how big the dog is. The ideal colors for Curly Coated Retrievers are black and brown. Random white hairs are allowable, but white pads are a considerable fault. A nicely-bred Curly will look somewhat leggy but is certainly a bit longer rather than tall. The breed's coat consists of crisp, tight curls. It is agile and balanced with a significant air of strength, endurance and grace. PersonalityThe Curly-Coated Retriever is excellent, loving and affectionate with kids. This Retriever is friendly, loyal and wanting to please. Confident, proud, very smart and trainable. Make sure to totally train them obediently beginning from puppyhood. They've been utilized in competitive agility and obedience trials, but aren't as competent as other breeds. This isn't a dog for everybody. They don't totally mature until they're around 3 years old and have a ton of childish energy. Common Health ProblemsSusceptible to eye problems, epilepsy and hip dysplasia.
