AKC Group: Non-Sporting Group The Dalmatian dog became very popular with the hit Disney movie and the book called 101 Dalmatians. This is the only spotted dog breed. Known for their intelligence and gentle nature they make great family pets. HistoryIt is believed that the Dalmatian breed originated from a region of Croatia known as Dalmatia. But England is credited with created the dog as we know it today. Very little is known about how the dog was created. But we do know that is has been used for many different purposes throughout the years. But lately it is best known as a firehouse dog. Most commonly seen riding fire-engines and in parades. Physical FeaturesDalmatian puppies are born all white and as they mature the spots appear. This dog stands from 19 to 24 inches high and weighs anywhere from 45 to 70 pounds. Their fur coat is short, dense, and hard. Colors include spots of black, brindled, brown (liver), dark blue, lemon, solid white, tricolor, or sable on a pure white coat. PersonalityDalmatians are known to be playful but prefers to have you initiate the game. Quick to learn by repetition but must keep focused and use positive reinforcement. Sensitive to harsh methods or harsh voice commands. It makes a good guard dog who will bark at intruders at the door. Friendly with other dogs but may spar for control over things like food. Common Health ProblemsIt has health issues such as hip dysplasia, arthritic problems and bone spurs. Also deafness is a big problem as well, with about 30% of Dalmatians suffering from some hearing loss.
