Dandie Dinmont Terrier Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris AKC Group: Terrier Group The Dandie Dinmont Terrier dog is a small dog with a big character. Throughout its history it has been popular with both wealthy merchants and gypsies alike. Created around 1700 in England, this dog can be a very loving family dog. HistoryDandie Dinmont Terriers started in Scotland in the 18th century and reveal a common lineage with the Scottish Terrier and Skye Terrier that are now vanished. In 1870's show dogs had turned out to be a craze and because of its great characteristics, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier was consistently a favorite breed. The Kennel Club came to exist in 1873 and a club devoted to Dandie Dinmont came to exist in 1875 on the borders of Scotland. Physical FeaturesDandie Dinmont Terriers are between 8 and 11 inches tall at the top of shoulders and weigh between 18 and 24 pounds. They are proportionately longer than they are tall. This dog is available in just 2 shades, Mustard and Pepper. Pepper shade runs from dark to light with silver. The head has a large topknot with dark eyes. The tail is described as "scimitar" or sword like when viewed from the side. PersonalityLoving and tender with the members of the family. Tenacious and independent, but is not dominating. It'll satisfactorily defend the family and property or home; distrustful of other people. Training is easy. Common Health ProblemsThe Dandie Dinmont Terriers likely suffer from eyes problems and back problems. Care should be taken to be sure to keep long hairs out of the eyes.
