Diamond Pet Food Recall of Dry Cat Foodby Dr. Chris December 1, 2009 Diamond Pet Foods has just announced today a recall of certain bags of dry cat food. This in in response to health problems that were reported in 21 cats at this time. The recall affects Premium Edge Hairball and Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat food. Some cats that have been fed this ingredient have experienced gastrointestinal and neurological problems. This is because this batch of cat food contains no thiamine, which is normally added during manufacturing and is an essential nutrient for cats. Symptoms Reported symptoms include salivation, weight loss, vomiting, and decreased appetite. Eventually neurological signs will develop which could include seizures, wobbly waling, circling, neck bent towards the floor, and falling. So far there have been 21 cases of cats that have a thiamine deficiency. These have all occurred in the states of New York and Pennsylvania. But the recalled Diamond Pet Food bags were distributed to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The company said affected cat food bags were removed from stores on September 23rd, 2009, and no new incidents have been reported since October 19th.
