Did Dog Die from Eating a Bird or Excessive Medications?

by Jay
(Atlanta)

Hi, i had neutered my dog. He is a lab,4 years old. 4 days after neutering there was swelling on his testicles. stitches were removed 10 days later. He ate a bird the following day. He started vomiting for next 3 days. Then diarrhea also followed which was reddish. Then food and liquids were stopped. Our vet took him at his house for 2 days to keep him under supervision. He was vomiting fluid with blood once food and liquids were stopped . He passed away at the vets place. He was given medicines and antibiotics after surgery and also during treatment. I feel he died of anaphylaxis caused due to so many different antibiotics. What is your suggestion. I am not ready to believe that the bird killed him.
Thank-You

Sorry To Hear About Your Dog's Death
by: Anonymous

Sorry to hear about your dog's prolonged illness and death, it is never easy to seem them struggle through that.

While I don't have all the details, I don't think it was due to anaphylaxis, because that is more of a very acute reaction.

I think it is possible that the bird may have killed your dog. If the bird was poisoned prior to death or decaying, you dog would have consumed toxins which would have caused the GI symptoms seen.

The only way to know for sure is to have a necropsy performed, but this might be futile and frustrating effort.
