Dog biting back legs

by Terra
(modesto)

my dog is biting himself all over his back legs etc, we shaved him because we thought he had hot spots upon shaving him we realised he had dark blue spots in the bitten areas surrounded by a red rash throughout his back. Is this a fungus and how do we treat it?

Hi Terra,

Sorry to hear about your dog's problem. A hot spot is usually just a single spot of inflammation. I think the blue spots you are seeing are brusises from the biting. I doubt this is a fungus, by guessing I would say it would be more likely be fleas due to the location. Allergies could be another cause, but usually don't present like this. Before you treat for fleas, see your vet to determine the exact cause so the treatment can specifically treat the problem.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
