Dog flea powders and Frontline

by Cindy
(Texas)

what is the best flea powder to use on my dog? I have two dogs with different skin types, one has dry skin and the topical frontline type applications make patches of hair fall out and she seems to be more bothered by the medication than the fleas, the other dog doesn't have as bad a reaction to the medication, but she does seem to itch more after the application and none of them seem to last for very long. I want to try a powder this year, can you tell me a good one to try? My grandmother always just used to use Sevin dust. Can that be used safely?

Hi Cindy,

Your dog having a reaction to Frontline is not that unusual and there are lots of natural flea powders on the market that could work. I am not familiar with a product called Sevin. But remember the nice thing with Frontline is that is also gets other parasites besides just fleas. Before you switch products, talk to your vet and see if you need protection from these other possible parasites in your area of the country.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
