Dog loosing hair around tail and has litter red spots and scratches

by Rosy
(Chicago)

For some reason my dog's hair has started to fall off dramatically, it is to the point were he is left with bald spots. but this is only happening on his back end, mostly on the tail. he also has these little red spots on his tail, and he scratches a lot. i was wondering if u have any idea what is happening to my dog?

Hi Rosy,

Sorry to hear about your dog's problem.

One possible cause could be fleas. Fleas can be very irritating to dogs, and they often tend to chew very aggressively the areas where the fleas are.

This can result in hair loss, and the little red spots are little from flea bites.

The best thing is to see a vet to confirm this condition.

If it is fleas, you need to treat your dog and the environment. Most of the problem you don't see. All the flea eggs and larve on in the environment and carpet.

So you need to be aware of this when you talk to your vet.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris

Pityriasis versicolor
by: Anonymous

Pityriasis versicolor

I think dogs can get Pityriasis versicolor. It is a skin condition caused by infection of the dead outer layer of skin cells with a fungus. This leads to lighter areas of skin with less pigmentation.

Treatment is usually with a topical antifungal cream in humans and the light areas return to their normal pigmentation after the skin layers are shed and new cells come to the surface
