Joie dragging back legs-not now
by: Anonymous

Thank you so much for your comments and sorry to hear about your babies. Need to report that Joie is on Rimadyl 50 milligrams and thyroid medication and is doing well. It's been over 6 months since the dragging of the back legs. Yet he is stiff and although he runs like the wind as cars pass our acreage - he's doing as well as can be expected. I massage his hind quarters every other day and as long as he's not suffering, we're ok. My vet thinks that prior to my getting Joie, he may have deer ticks, possibly lyme disease. Thousands of dollars later, this is the most I've ever gotten as a possibility for his fever, stiffness, inability to drink or eat.

Thank you again for sharing your story.

hind legs not working and swollen
by: Anonymous

On thursday night my dog was acting a bit slow and having a great deal of trouble walking,on friday morning hind legs would not work. His skin became very akwardly tight to his body and he felt ever so hot and was shaking and had lots of yellowish green discharge from his right eye.Yesterday on saturday i noticed that he was dragging himself to the doors so i could still take him out to use the bathroom but last night he would just urinate and poop where ever he was and then drag himself away. For two days he didnt bark and then last night he started again. He does seem to have appetite now but i woory about how hot he was and is he going to be permanently damaged. He looks in his face back to himself but his skin is flaking?!Anyone understand???

My shitsu/maltese cross weak hind legs
by: Anonymous

My little dog, Rusty also has been experiencing same type of impairment. I have been watching him closely, he is eating ok and drinking, but very wobbly in the hind legs. He cannot lift his leg to urinate, but will squat. He is determined though to try his best to move along. I do carry him up the stairs or carry him up to my lap as he is no longer able to jump up on his own. He is only 3 yrs and 9 months old. We do also have a female lab/retreiver cross who is 1 1/2 yr old. They used to both play together a lot and I wonder if he may have gotten hurt during play. We live in a rural area and vet only here for one day, Wednesday's. This injury occured now over 4 days ago. Am planning to take him to the vet this Wednesday. I would appreciate any comments on this site if anyone has an idea.

Found out about hind quarter weakness
by: CB for Joie

FYI. Took Joie to the Vet, had x rays and found he has left rear hip dysplasia (sp?). Reason for the Rymadyl was that although the blood test didn't show it - Vet thinks he had ticks (lyme disease) and was originally put on steriods then Rymadyl. He is also on thyroid medication as blood work indicated it was low. He still has weakness and issues lifting his hind quarters. Once he gets started, he does run/play - yet easily can see he has issues. Back on Rymadyl. Joie is only 4 years old, a flat coated retriever mix. Aware that he probably will not live as long as a dog without these issues, yet still has a good quality of life and I of course love him and encourage and massage him daily. As with most pets, he wants to please and pushes himself. Although this is happening to him now, his original illness (poss. Lyme Disease) made him sick about every 3 months with fever, stiffness, inability to eat or drink much and very little movement (holding his body tight with head low and standing for long periods of time in one spot and appeared to be in pain with any movement at all. He's a tough, gentle dog and as long as he is not in pain and has a decent quality of life, we continue. Thank you for your input, it's been a rough road by know that he is doing as well as can be expected and cared for as well as possible. Wishing you w/pet issues to hang in there and enjoy them.

4 Yr old Mixed flat coated lab hind qtrs not ok
by: CB for Joie

My dog has been on Rimadyl for 2 yrs now. Just yesterday when I called him he could not lift his hind quarters. I gently lifted him and he could then walk - a little wobbly and stiff in his hind quarters. When I pulled up his rear, he didn't flinch or seem to be in pain. Put his food down to which he scootched to it w/front paws only. Have a vet appt in the morning, stopped the Rimadyl for 2 days now. Seems okay, but for him to exhibit this hind quarter symptom is disturbing. Notice he's rubbing his eyes and they appear to be in a squint like appearance. Anyone have any input on this?

Dog not walking right
by: JanW

I would also like to know if anyone has found out anything. My 9 yr old cocker spaniel was playing hall ball thurs nite, and all of a sudden he sat down and then could not walk right. He does not seem to be in pain. I took him to the vet fri. and vet said could be either compressed disc or blood clot that went to nuerological area of brain that controls back legs. Said MRI would be inconclusive to which it was. But from the way he was walking wobbly and not seeming to be in pain, he was assuming the bloodclot. He is treating him with steriods anyway. My dog has improved some. He is normal in every way but his back legs seem weak, he can't jump up on any thing. I think I am going to try a second opinion.

Breed?
by: Anonymous

I don't know what breed of dog you have, but some breeds have spinal disc problems. If you search the web some breeds are prone to acute rupture and other are prone to chronic slow ruptures. I would call the vet
