Dog with cut on chest

My dog has a cut on his chest, it is not bleeding, it just looks like something may have poked him while running through the woods but it split the skin, I have already cleaned it and tried to bandage it but the bandage fell off, I tried to call my local Vet to see if their was anything i can do for him and they said i would just have to bring him in, well i can not afford to take him to the Vet, i need to know if there is anything that i can do for this cut?
Thank you

Hi,

You have done to the right things so far my cleaning it. Try to keep the area clean. Triple antibiotic ointment could be applied to the area as well if you are worried about infection. It doesn't seem like the cut is too deep because there is no blood so it must be very superficial.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
