Dog with discharge after spay

by sheryl

Hi, I adopted a dog from a shelter this weekend. She was spayed about 7 days before we brought her home. The problem is she is leaking a thick yellow sometime blood tinged mucus from her vagina. I brought her to our vet and he said that she may have been spayed while in heat. Are there any other indicators that this is true. She is eating fine and seems active. She does seem a little sore in the back end of her back. I have been reading about dogs that were spayed while pregnant could this be a possibility too. What I need to know are what are warning signs to look for and how long does the discharge usually last?

thanks sheryl

Hi Sheryl,

I think your vet is right to assume this. Some dogs do have some discharge after being spayed while in heat. But this could be a sign of a possible infection.

Warning signs to look for a possible infection is a smelly discharge, decrease appetite, or fever. If you notice any of these take her back to the vet.

Our 10 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever was spayed back in May 2011 because her uterus was full of pus. Due to a mass on her ovaries our vet couldnt remove them but he did remove the uterus. She still comes in heat but is unable to get pregnant. Now she has greenish thick mucus coming from her vagina. At first we was worried and she was given antibiotics (about a month after her surgery). But after 3 months it still happens. Our vet told us that it may just be a normal thing with her now and we shouldnt worry about it cause everything she can get an infection in was taken out. Anybody ever heard of this?

discharge after spaying

Hey, my 4yrs old rescued scottish terrier was spayed 6 weeks ago and a few days after that started to have sticky bloody discharge which eventually became thick, smelly and yellowish/greenish in colour. After 4 weeks of antibiotics the problem still persists and now the vet suggests an utlrasound scan on her but with no guarantee that they'll find the root problem. Pls share yr experience if you've found a solution for yr doggie. Thanks
