Dog with discharge after spay

by sheryl
(Georgia)

Hi, I adopted a dog from a shelter this weekend. She was spayed about 7 days before we brought her home. The problem is she is leaking a thick yellow sometime blood tinged mucus from her vagina. I brought her to our vet and he said that she may have been spayed while in heat. Are there any other indicators that this is true. She is eating fine and seems active. She does seem a little sore in the back end of her back. I have been reading about dogs that were spayed while pregnant could this be a possibility too. What I need to know are what are warning signs to look for and how long does the discharge usually last?
thanks sheryl

Hi Sheryl,

I think your vet is right to assume this. Some dogs do have some discharge after being spayed while in heat. But this could be a sign of a possible infection.

Warning signs to look for a possible infection is a smelly discharge, decrease appetite, or fever. If you notice any of these take her back to the vet.

Dr. Chris
