Dog with possible mammary tumor

by Kathy
(Torrington, CT)

Dear Dr. Chris: You answered a question for me regarding my 6 year old peke with leaking nipples. You said that the reason for this could be mammary tumor - what is the prognosis, normally, for this condition?? Is it like when humans have tumors and they are either malignant or benign?? Does it mean that she may die if the vet finds she has tumors?? Just curious as to what to expect when I take her to the vet. No surprises, you know? Would appreciate the clarification of the condition you mentioned. Look forward to your answer. Thanks, in advance, for your insight and/or information. Thank you, Kathy

Hi Kathy, in the chance that is it a mammary tumor (it seems low) but if it is the treatment depends on what stage it is at. If it is a local swelling than usually just a surgical removal should be curative, if it has spread more, than a more aggressive surgery and treatment would be needed. But let's see what your vet says before we assume anything. Thanks Dr. Chris
