Don't Give Calcium To Pregnant Dogs!
by Dr. Chris
November 3, 2008 Thinking about giving your pregnant dog calcium supplements during pregnancy? You shouldn't because dogs given calcium supplements during pregnancy are more prone to postpartum hypocalcemia (eclampsia).
This is a metabolic condition usually seen in small breed dogs nursing large litters two to three weeks after whelping.
Signs of this condition are ataxia, dilated pupils, disorientation, rapid heart rate, and neglecting the pups.
The reason to avoid supplementing pregnant dogs with calcium is that the parathyroid hormone level decreases with calcium supplementation, and then after whelping, this hormone cannot recover quickly enough to keep calcium levels normal, thus a low blood level of calcium results.
Consult your veterinarian if you are or want to supplement your pregnant dog. Giving a well balanced diet is the best thing to do.
