AKC Group: Sporting Group The English Cocker Spaniel is a dog this is full of energy and loves to work. Descended from Spanish Spaniels, this is one of the oldest of all land spaniels. A very affectionate dog that makes a great family dog. HistoryEnglish Cocker spaniel is definitely the most ancient kind of land spaniel that originated from first spaniels that came from Spain. The very first reference of Spaniel was created in 1300 by Gaston Phebus. Before 17th century, all spaniels were regarded as one breed. Afterwards they were split into several groups depending on their hunting size and ability. Physical FeaturesEnglish cocker spaniel males reach a height of about 16 to 17 inches, and a weight of about 28 to 34 pounds. Females reach a height of about 15 to 16 inches and weigh about 26 to 32 pounds. The color of their coat varies greatly. They come in various shades of roan like black, golden, liver, red with tan points at the chest, eyebrows, feet, muzzle and throat. One of the most desired shades is Blue roan. The coat is extremely soft around the ears and head while hair on the body is a bit rougher. The English cocker spaniel is taller, heavier and doesn't possess as much stomach hair like its American cousin. PersonalityEnglish Cocker Spaniels are very loveable creatures that like to play and romp. They love having fun with children. Clever but a little bit stubborn. It'll learn things easily. Friendly to strangers but be attentive because sometimes they can be defensive. Could be friendly to other animals, particularly cats. Excellent with kids and caring. Likes having fun with them. Common Health ProblemsHip dysplasia, Cardiac problems and cancer. Lives on average 11 to 12 years. Some solid orange spaniels and solid black spaniels may experience "rage syndrome." Because of this they are not recommended as family pets.
