English Foxhound Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris AKC Group: Hound Group The English Foxhound is a determined and energetic hunter. Used to being in a pack it gets along great with dogs and people. This breed is a little bit shorter then its close relative, the American Foxhound. HistoryEnglish Foxhounds originated in the UK even before the 19th century. The English foxhound originated by an intermixed reproduction of numerous hounds and then bred with Fox Terrier, bulldog and the greyhound. These other dog breeds provided the English foxhound its excellent energy and speed necessary in hunting sprees. British Experts of the Foxhound Organization that came to exist in the 19th century have held a very meticulously, preserved studbook for the breeding. Physical FeaturesThe English Foxhound stands between 22 and 25 inches tall. Females usually are a bit shorter, 21 and 24 inches tall. They normally weight between 65 and 70 pounds. Their coat normally has three colors; white, tan, and black. Sometimes they have 2 shades of white on them. The coat is thick, hard, and short which make for easy care. Most of these coats protect the dogs when they must enter into bramble and foliage. A waterproof coat enables them to operate in harsh climates and rough weathers. With strong bodies and hunting intuition, they make great guard dogs, pets, and can be used on farms. With a low shedding coat, care is quite easy. PersonalityThis breed will bark to notify family members that something isn't right. This dog is playful and lively. It'll play seeking kind of games. They need plenty of patience whilst training despite the fact that they're obedient dogs. While they are hunting canines, they want different, game oriented exercises. It's a loving family pet that will give back your love. Common Health ProblemsThis is a normally healthy dog with very few health problems. Average life span is between 10 and 13 years.
